"IT'S A WRAP!" PLACER COUNTY FAIR ENDS SUCCESSFUL RUN
The weather cooperated for the Placer County Fair, which wrapped up the 2011 annual event on Sunday. With temperatures in the high 80s or low 90s it was pleasant weather for visitors to stroll the grounds and enjoy the Hollywood Stunt Show and the return of the lawnmower races.
The new on-the-spot contests were popular with no problem lining up 10 contestants at a time for pie, watermelon and hot dog eating contests. The mustache and beard contests drew contenders from the Bay Area as well as a few hairy men that just happened to be walking by. And Sunday's Holly-Woof Day brought out some friendly canine companions.
The new cooking demonstrations by Chef Gary Gilligan were also a big hit as the word spread and by Sunday it was standing room only for demos and samples of Cake Pops and Pop Tarts On-a-Stick.
Celebrity speed painter, Tim Decker, was one of the most popular entertainers as crowds stood mesmerized to finally realize which celebrity would appear before their eyes. With paintings created in under six minutes, Tim's flying brushes painted Elvis, John Lennon, Einstein and Hendrix.
Attendance this year was 26,116 with a big day on Saturday, keeping abreast of the 2010 gate when attendance soared over 2009. Organizers say that offering a free gate in 2010 so visitors could see the changes to the Fair paid off when they returned to a partially paid gate this year. Admission remained free before 3:00 each day, then a $4 admission for adults and $2 for children was charged. Joan Bartosik, CEO, said "Numbers are only one indication of the success of this year's Fair. We had more community involvement, beautiful displays, some fun new contests we will plan to repeat, and we provided a safe environment for our visitors."
A new event on opening night, "Simply Placer", showcased food and products made in Placer County, co-hosted by the Fair and the Mountain Mandarin Festival. Mark Gilmore, host of the 98 Rock radio station's Local Licks show brought several local bands to perform on Saturday.
Community involvement remained strong as a bevy of beauties participated in the various Miss Placer County pageants, and talent prevailed in the annual talent show. Shawna Bruce, 25 of Rocklin, was named Miss Placer County and Lauren Lagge, 16, of Lincoln, was named Miss Teen Placer County.
"We had a great team who thought outside the box and used every opportunity we had available to us and there was strong support from the Fair Board. I couldn't be more proud of the fair staff and all our crews from our greeters to our parkers to the maintenance and clean-up crews."
